The Design for Fabrication class challenged students to design and fabricate real solutions to problems with no single correct answer. This is a gallery of some personal and group projects.
Car Launcher
In this project, the goal was to launch a die-cast car up to the top of a wooden ramp from a set distance away. To solve this, I determined the spring coefficient of a set of rubber bands and created a spring-loaded shooter mechanism out of wooden scraps. After much trial and error, I had a minimum viable product to bring to class. I was the first student to launch their car to the top of the ramp.
WoodenSwivel Stool
For this project we needed to fabricate a weight-supporting object, i.e. a chair. I decided to recreate one of my favorite stools from home, which had a rotating top. I began by modeling the chair in PTC OnShape to assess what size to cut all of the pieces. I purchased a large lazy susan ball bearing and used a wood router to cut a slot for it in a laser cut piece of wood. I used a circular saw and band saw to cut out all the legs and supports, and used wood screws to fasten the whole thing together. I wood glued a thin strip of wood around the edge for a nice finish.
DIY Perplexus Game
The goal was to create our own version of the popular Perplexus Game. In a group, we each modeled a segment of the game and 3D printed it, fastening them to each other and fixing them inside the plastic sphere. It took a lot of trial and error, but we got the game to a state where it could be completed by the player without too much difficulty.
Gravity Powered Record Player
This project had us working in groups of 2 to create a record player powered by gravity. I began by designing a gearbox that would slow the descent of a weight and spin the final gear at 45 RPM. A paper funnel was created to maximize the output noise. We had issues getting the weight to fall at the correct speed, and the best we ended up getting was a sped-up garbled noise that sounded vaguely like music, but even making it that far was a great accomplishment for the class.
Moving Picture Sculpture
In this project we worked in pairs to create a moving image within a larger frame for a window sculpture. We had a set window size to work with a moving shaft to use. We decided to make a UFO abduction scene, with gears leading from the drive shaft to a rotating bar. Constrained on either side as a slider joint at the top, the bar transformed the shaft's rotational motion to a linear up-and-down motion...essentially a piston. From here we decorated each part of the window and each moving part to complete our scene.
Cog Railway Final Project
Our final project was to create a cog railway as a class, with each segment completed by groups of 3-4 students. Our group was in charge of building a drawbridge that would allow wheelchair users to pass into the building when raised, and allow two railway cars (each carrying a rider) to pass when lowered. This project was super fun and the class had a blast taking turns pushing each other around the completed track, sprawled out across the engineering building patio.
