My senior design project was a collaboration with Amazon Robotics to develop a sensor cleaning system for their Proteus factory robot. I began by assessing the most significant user needs and engineering requirements for our solution. This step included assessing existing solutions, as well as developing concept sketches for our design. We decided to build a "car wash" for Proteus, to clean its sensors during its mandatory charging hours, as not to impede on its productivity. Throughout this entire process we worked closely with Tim Martin, a current Amazon Robotics engineer and Tufts Alumni. Our early design review presentation is listed below.
ME74 Mini Design Review
Our first prototype was inspired by our early sketches, and our second prototype built upon those ideas. We incorporated a large ball bearing and unique sensor cleaner geometry to reach the deepest crevices of Proteus' round LiDAR sensor, as well as two lead screws to lower the cleaner over the robot and raise it when the charging process was complete. Our second prototype design review slides are listed below. The primary driving motivation remained the same from the previous iterations, but the mechanism was leaps and bounds more polished than the earlier versions.
