The final project for my Materials and Manufacturing class was to create a product as a group that showcased our various production skills. We decided on creating an apple cider press. We used several tools to fabricate this device, including water jet, mill, and several rolling and fastening techniques.
We began by designing our final model in SOLIDWORKS CAD. The design was inspired by the original apple juicer patent from the early 20th century and featured a wooden frame, aluminum collecting tray and basket. The pressure to crush the apples is applied by turning a threaded rod, which lowers a plate onto the tray of applies. The handle has spokes so a metal rod can be placed on top, allowing the user to apply more leverage and thus more torque, successfully juicing the apples below.
In the end, we were able to produce 67 mL of apple juice from 8 apples. We believe that with higher quality produce, we can use the same device to collect more juice from the same number of apples.
